The work of school board members is often overwhelming. Shrinking resources, growing mandates and members with different priorities make leading a school district all the more difficult. In addition, often members with twenty or more years of board experience work alongside recently elected members with little experience in school leadership. This creates frustration for every member.

With these challenges, many school districts are never able to come together around a common vision. The School Perceptions Annual Planning Inventory (API) was designed as a comprehensive online inventory that is taken anonymously by board members to establish school district priorities, goals and a common vision.

The API was developed with the help of school administrators, school board members and the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and is perfect for any board looking to find agreement on a common course of action.

The API works by establishing those areas where members agree, where there is disagreement and where members can create a common vision for the district.

Reflection: The API was designed so that each board member has the ability to participate at a time of his or her choosing, allowing time for individual reflection.

Alignment: The goal of an effective board is not to agree on every issue but to focus on areas of agreement and to create a common vision for the district.
